"being more technical"

Writer: John GarrishJohn Garrish

A classic complaint is Devs getting frustrated because PMs don’t know all the things THEY know.

I would argue that the current crisis in PM is, in fact, driven by enmeshing TOO closely with dev - trying somehow to outdev dev. But this is not only pointless, it takes the team to a dark place. To wit, the endless and fatiguing “who is in charge here” arguments.

Technical perspective for PMs is important - obviously - just like market and customer perspective is important for devs. The question is - AS A TEAM - how do you get better at both? And how do you get better at making decisions based on BOTH?

Generally products get better when PMs take it as their job to cultivate a more independent and clear-eyed focus about what drives value - outside in - rather than being more technical for the sake of being more technical.
